Is An Exotic Pet Really What You Want?

Posted by Lee Peterson

An exotic pet certainly seems to suit some people, and you may feel that it would be the ideal accessory to go with your designer labels and cosmopolitan lifestyle. Think it through before you rush out to find your exotic pet.

Exotic pets include rodents, birds and reptiles – in fact any wild animal is categorized as exotic if it is not naturally found in homes. Their natural habitat is not a house, and taking them out of the wild can create problems.

Exotic pets are not domesticated, and they can be difficult to manage, no matter how stylish they look. In certain circumstances they can attack their owners, simply because they are out of their natural environment.

Feeding and Caring for your Exotic Pet

Do you know where to find the food your exotic pet eats? Or how much to feed it? Most wild animals catch and eat as much as they can in the wild to ensure survival. Overfeeding an exotic pet is unhealthy, and underfeeding it will add to the frustration and possible aggression of the animal. Consider also that many of them need live food – not always a pleasant task for the owner.

Your local veterinarian probably has little experience with exotic pets, who often have exotic illnesses. Finding a specialist who can treat a sick exotic pet may involve travel and considerable expense.

There Are Laws Governing Exotic Pets Too

Because they are wild animals, the ownership of exotic pets may require a special permit or license. Before you buy your pet, make sure you know what the legal ramifications are for the area you live in.

Local regulations will probably require that you make sure the exotic animal is secured on your property. This is to prevent possible injury to neighbors and their pets, as an animal in unfamiliar surroundings may react aggressively due to stress and fear. This is your responsibility, and you will have to buy or build an appropriate enclosure. Before you get an exotic pet, consider whether it is the right step for you – and for the animal. Exotic pets are a lucrative business as long as there is a demand for them, but just because they are available does not make it the right thing to do – for you or for the animal.
