Dealing With An Aggressive Dog – The Do’s And Dont’s

Posted by Carl Covason

All dogs have the possibility of being aggressive. Some people believe that certain breeds of dogs are naturally aggressive but the truth is that the dogs that get a bad rap for being aggressive are the ones that people tend to train to be aggressive.

For example, take the pit bull. In the long and short of it, pit bulls are not overly aggressive by themselves. The reason people believe they are is because people like to train pit bulls to be aggressive.

While you can not classify all dogs from one breed as being aggressive, every dog will have its own personality. If you find that you have an aggressive dog you need to use caution around them especially if they are around children.

So what do you do if you get a dog that is a bit on the aggressive side?

Well it actually depends on how aggressive they are and what they get aggressive about.

One way dogs display aggression is by lying low to the floor like they are going to pounce and growling. It is usually best to just pretend that your dog is not even there when they do this. The worst thing you can do is look them in the eye because by doing that you are issuing a challenge and it will turn into a game of who is in control.

Never try to grab your dog or show your dominance when this happens or it will turn into a game of who is in charge. Once it becomes a game for your dog it will be very hard to break him of doing it.

If your dog has a food aggression then it is best to stay in the same room with him while he is eating his meals. Never touch an aggressive dog when he is eating. Start out by staying on the other side of the room while he eats and slowly get closer every meal.

Always use caution when doing this and pay close attention to the signs your dog is giving you. If he starts to get nervous or agitated then do not get any closer.

When you have a very aggressive dog the best thing you can do is to use caution when around your dog and talk to a dog trainer on the best way to handle your individual situation.
